Volunteer Firefighters Relief Associations (VFRAs) play a crucial role in providing financial protection to volunteer firefighters who selflessly serve their communities. These non-profit organizations are established to assist firefighters who face misfortune in the line of duty. In Pennsylvania, VFRAs receive vital support through a 2-percent state tax on fire insurance purchased by residents from out-of-state insurance companies. This funding is instrumental in ensuring the well-being of volunteer firefighters.
The allocated funds serve multiple essential purposes, including procuring insurance coverage for volunteer firefighters, acquiring necessary fire equipment, and covering the costs associated with volunteer training programs. It's important to note that VFRAs operate as distinct legal entities independent of fire companies, underscoring their autonomy and accountability.
To ensure transparency and adherence to state regulations, VFRA funds undergo rigorous auditing processes. The Department of the Auditor General actively oversees these audits and conducts workshops to assist local firefighters in navigating VFRA regulations effectively.
The commitment to supporting volunteer firefighters is evident in the significant financial distribution by the Department of the Auditor General on behalf of the commonwealth. In 2007 alone, over $67 million was disbursed to 1,967 local VFRAs, reinforcing the state's dedication to safeguarding those who bravely protect our communities.
